Wits Named Top University In Africa- Academic Ranking of World Universities

The higher education and training ministry has congratulated The University of the Witwatersrand has been names the top University in Africa by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai rankings.

RWU has been presenting the world Top 500 universities annually based on transparent methodology and third-party data. This year, in addition to the top 500 universities, ShanghaiRanking announced the list of universities ranked between 501 and 800 as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates.

With a score in the 201-300 band, Wits has taken the first spot in Africa for the second time. The University of Cape Town is second best of the SA universities (301-400) followed by Stellenbosch‚ University of Johannesburg and University of KwaZulu-Natal (401-500).

The University of Johannesburg has made an impressive debut into the list making it to the 601-800 band for the first time.

The University of Pretoria made it in the 501-600 ranking band‚ followed by North West University in the 601-700 band and the University of South Africa in the 701-800 band.
